Sudan’s military rulers and protest leaders
resumed necessary talks Monday over handing strength to a civilian
administration after days of impasse in negotiations, a spokesperson for
the protest movement told AFP.
Protest leaders Omar al-Digeir and
Satea al-Haj had been amongst those attending the talks on behalf of
the Alliance for Freedom and Change umbrella movement, the group’s
spokeswoman Mashar Darraj said.
The assembly used to be being held
in the back of closed doorways at a convention centre in central
Khartoum, an AFP correspondent mentioned from the venue.
The
state-of-the-art spherical of talks, which have hit snags on quite a few
key issues, comes as thousands of protesters remain camped outdoor the
military headquarters in central Khartoum.
They say they are
determined to force the ruling military council to cede energy — just as
they pushed the army into deposing veteran president Omar al-Bashir on
April 11.
The protest alliance stated Saturday the generals had invited the motion for a new round of talks.
The
navy generals and protesters are at loggerheads over who will take a
seat on a new ruling body that would exchange the present army council.
The generals have proposed that the new council be military-led, while the protest leaders want a majority civilian body.
Late
last month, the alliance — which brings together protest organisers,
opposition parties and insurrection organizations — surpassed the
generals its proposals for a civilian-led transitional government.
But the generals have pointed to what they name “many reservations” over the alliance’s roadmap.
They
have singled out its silence on the constitutional role of Islamic
sharia law, which used to be the guiding precept of all regulation under
Bashir’s rule however is anathema to secular organizations like the
Sudanese Communist Party and some rebellion factions in the alliance.
The alliance has stated it wishes to “sort out all these factors in seventy two hours” as soon as the talks resume.
Protesters meanwhile remained camped backyard the navy headquarters in the capital, disturbing that the generals step down.
Crowds
have dwindled at some stage in the day due to the scorching heat, but
protesters nonetheless accumulate in the heaps after breaking the
quickly in the nighttime for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
