President Donald Trump on Thursday backed off his threat to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border, marking his second main climbdown this week.
Talking to newshounds in the White House, Trump stated that he would instead provide Mexico a “one-year warning” to give up the float of capsules into the United States and that he would first impose auto tariffs before closing the border.
Several hours later, the president distanced himself similarly from his previous promises to shut it down.
“Before we shut the border, we‘ll put the tariffs on the cars,“ he stated whilst speakme to newshounds in the Oval Office. “I don‘t assume we‘ll ever have to shut the border.“
The reversal comes after fellow Republicans, business organizations and even some of his very own aides warned him of dire monetary penalties if Trump moved forward with his threat.
“The solely issue frankly better, but much less drastic than closing the border, is to tariff the vehicles coming in,” Trump stated in his in the past exchange. "We're going to supply them a one-year warning and if the pills don't end or mostly stop, we'll put tariffs on Mexico and products, in particular cars.”
The president also denied numerous hours later that the border would remain open for at least a year.
“I didn‘t say that. We‘ll start with the tariffs and see what happens,“ he said in the Oval Office, doubling down that he would propose a “big tariff deal“ than shut the border.
Trump’s shift comes days after he said he would shut the border as soon as this week if Mexican leaders have been unable to stem the glide of migrants crossing into the U.S. He’s set to head to the southern border on Friday as his administration has sounded the alarm about a current surge in migrants from Mexico and Central America arriving at the border.
The about-face is the second major one for Trump in a week — the president appeared to bow from public stress earlier this week when he said he had decided to punt pushing any important fitness care rules until after the 2020 election, regardless of his Justice Department helping a lawsuit to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.
